The Chain CondomTM Story
Something called a “Chain Condom” has to have an interesting story, right? It all began years ago in the garage and at the kitchen table of professional cycling team soigneur Dave Bolch. After years in pro cycling, Dave had seen just about every way to transport a bike—from racks on top of team cars holding “race-ready” bikes during long stage races to the variety of individual bike bags and cases pro cyclists dragged to training camps.
But when they weren’t at races or training camps, all the pros were just like the rest of us—putting their bikes in the backs of their cars a lot. Covering the chain with a sheet or towel wasn’t keeping grease off anyone’s interiors. So Dave used a brown paper grocery bag to make a template, cut out some fabric and put his wife’s dusty sewing machine to good use at the kitchen table. He stitched up the first chain covers and started using them on training trips he made with athletes like Lance Armstrong.
Just before one trip to train in Europe, Lance asked Dave, “You got any of those ‘Chain Condoms?’” The name was perfect. And the fact that the Chain Condom was so useful that top pros were asking for it spurred Dave on to make it available to everyone who wants to protect a bike, a car and all their other goodies.
